陳嘉銘老師讀書會「民主、帝國與地緣政治」
時間：3/25開始，每週五下午3:30-6:00 (暫訂)

方式：預計將分上下兩次舉行，每次十個禮拜。

讀書會主題：
主權國家體系和憲政民主，是20世紀中葉第三世界民族自決以來，逐步擴散和鞏固的基本國際體制。這個國際體制卻似乎充滿矛盾和困惑。不被主權國家體系承認的許多人民和文化、在強權軍事投射能力競爭夾縫中的扈從國家、無法在慘烈的國際資本積累競爭有喘息於地的窮國，這些人民和國家的民主，常常只能低度實現、或者極不穩定。
我們要問：這個國際體制是否最終能實現康德的永久和平論?為什麼民主強權要不斷擴張跨國支配能力，並且容易和非民主強權發生霸權衝突?民主在這個國際體制中扮演的角色是什麼?這個包含憲政民主的國際體制是否是導致民主在許多國家低度或無法穩定實現的外部原因?這個國際體制是否對許多人民、國家和文化有根本歧視?民主是否只能侷限在主權國家內部?民主是西方的嗎?我們能否從民主的諸多理論和實踐中，思索當前國際體制的替代方案?
第一次讀書會(上)，我們的主要關懷是民主，熟悉民主豐富的各種理解途徑，並討論民主本身是否具有對外的排他性和競爭性。我們將閱讀盧梭、托克維爾、熊彼得、道爾、派特曼、派迪特、沃林、勒福爾(Lefort)、哈伯瑪斯、本哈比(Benhabib)、夏比洛(Shapiro)、傅柯、默夫(Mouffe)等人的民主理論，討論卡爾‧施密特(Carl
Schmidt)對民主的批評及回應，也會閱讀非西方國家知識分子對民主的看法。
第二次讀書會(下)，我們的主要關懷在國際關係和民主的交軌，我們將討論現實主義、帝國、自由貿易體制等等對民主的影響，以及跨國民主的可能性或不可能性。
搭配學術會議：
中研院將在2011年12月舉辦「民主、帝國與地緣政治」國際學術研討會，到時將有來自十個國家的學者雲集，討論我們讀書會觸及的許多主題。希望我們這個讀書會，可以幫助學生參與這個國際學術研討會，獲得最好的知識收穫和刺激。
