This article exemplifies several focal points. Firstly, the core of Hsun-tsu’s political thought which is also known as “Li-chih” (to rule by civility) emphasizes on three dimensions : to modify the human character, to keep social stratification and to make good use of things (especially civility). Secondly, understood as civility in Hsün-tsu’s works, Li means a set of norms that define relationship and determine the mode of resources allocation in a feudal system. Thirdly, to re-build political order after the collapse of feudal system, Hsün-tsu, followed the steps of Confucius, drew out the importance of Li and gave different attribute to Li (i.e. to make Li similar to law). Finally, regarding Li as the best quintessence of human experiences, Hsün-tsu pointed out that by the way of modifying human nature, keeping the social stratification and making good use of things (especially civility), will make Li function everywhere and the most penetrative.
